Programme structure

About

Hang Seng’s Management Trainee Programme offers a holistic development approach,  centred around 2 key dimensions, Enterprise and Professional. At the enterprise level, aspiring leaders are immersed in our purpose, values and strategies in fintech and Greater Bay Area business as well as Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) initiatives. The professional level focuses on 10 business and function streams. You'll build your core banking knowledge and specialist skills in an inclusive environment and equip yourself with future skills, designed and offered through our expansive and agile learning environment, customised to enhance your development and growth.

The first 24 months of the programme will be about maximising your exposure in order to gain the essential work-related knowledge and skills through rotations across core departments. You'll acquire valuable experience by participating in bank-wide projects and working in cross-functional teams. You'll then leverage your core department rotations and choose a placement area which usually lasts up to 12 months, starting the development of your career in the selected area of expertise. What to expect

Commercial Banking connects entrepreneurial businesses to opportunities through our relationship managers and digital capabilities. You'll rotate across Relationship Management teams that work directly with clients to support and expand their operations.

You can also work in Global Trade teams that offer services and finance for buyers and suppliers, or with our Product Management teams, that develop new, digital services to improve the experience of our customers, and incorporate ESG considerations into our client solutions.

The DBS MT Programme offers recent graduates a chance to become innovative and data-driven leaders and change agents within Hang Seng. What to expect

The Functional Services MT Programme offers unique broad-based development experience to build core capabilities in one of the three mainstreams, either in Finance, Risk and Compliance, or Strategic Planning and Corporate Development. You'll then rotate to areas outside of these mainstreams in functional areas such as Digital Business Services, Audit, middle office in Wealth and Personal Banking and Wholesale Banking.

The Programme prepares you for a strong-focused professional career and opens opportunities across Hang Seng in businesses or functions to suit your interests and skills.

Finance

Asset Liability and Capital Management

  • Assist in preparing materials for the bank’s Asset and Liability Committee (ALCO)
  • Work with businesses in managing liquidity and Interest Rate Risk in the Banking Book (IRRBB) risks
  • Take part in the preparation of risk-weighted asset calculations for capital reporting
  • Assist in the capital planning and forecast cycle

Finance Strategy and Execution

  • Support the bank’s finance functions in implementing the operational risk and control management framework
  • Liaise with Operational Risk and provide support and guidance to Finance teams, to ensure that appropriate operational risk and control identification and assessment is undertaken for the Finance function in Hong Kong and at overseas sites
  • Assist in the production of risk and control reports with regard to advised committee meeting schedules, to facilitate review and decision making

Financial Reporting

  • Assist in preparing the Group’s consolidated financial reports including statutory financial statements and published materials relating to interim and final results announcements
  • Support preparation of prudential returns and other reports required by regulators
  • Prepare financial and regulatory related information to senior management, the board and various committees
  • Perform accounting and ledger control functions to ensure compliance with relevant regulatory requirements of the Banking Ordinance and HKMA guidelines

Financial Reporting Risk

  • Provide advice and guidance to support the risk policy for managing Financial Reporting Risk. Perform review and challenge to issues, actions and incidents reported by first line businesses and functions. Oversee remediation and closure of issues
  • Assist in accounting standards implementation, new product due diligence and provide accounting opinion to businesses
  • Ensure compliance to the Sarbanes Oxley Act (SOX) within the Bank, including SOX deficiencies reporting and annual certification
  • Conduct periodic assurance reviews within and outside the Finance function, to ensure adequate controls are in place to mitigate Financial Reporting Risk, and to help improve effectiveness of operations within the Finance function

Insurance Business Finance

  • Participate in finance and accounting related activities of the insurance operations under the bank, including financial control, regulatory reporting, forecast and planning, product development and projects, as well as ALCM/capital management
  • Interact with a wide range of business, or functional departments, such as Actuarial, Investment, Operation and Business Departments
  • Gain an understanding of the Insurance Business Finance Department and insurance industry specific knowledge
  • Learn the dynamics of how the insurance operations' financial results are incorporated into the bank-wide financial results

Product Control

  • Support the daily and monthly profit/loss and other production tasks related to the bank's Markets and Securities Service and Markets Treasury, to gain knowledge in market products
  • Gain knowledge of and practice in performing different controls activities to manage risk, and understanding the importance of non-financial risk
  • Involve in ad hoc projects and new product due diligence, as well as exposure to user acceptance testing for system implementation

 

Risk and Compliance

Wealth and Personal Banking (WPB) Risk

  • Participate in WPB Risk team's Risk Steward and Risk Advisor roles to set the risk appetite for retail lending, as well as monitor the portfolio of WPB products to inform and refine credit policies, procedures and models, via a wide range of risk management governance frameworks and controls

Wholesale Credit Risk Management (WCRM)

  • Learn the end-to-end Wholesale Credit Risk Management operating model, as an independent second line of defence. WCRM covers a wide range of aspects: defining risk appetite statement/threshold, establishing credit policies, designing and monitoring controls, managing the end-to-end credit journey from credit approvals, and special credit management, as well as facilitating regulatory monitoring and decision making through analytics
  • Participate in and learn from our subject matter experts on credit underwriting, risk control, portfolio review, model analytics and specialised credit handling

Regulatory Conduct

  • Develop and maintain good partnerships with internal stakeholders from lines of business and functions to provide professional advice on regulatory conduct matters
  • Have opportunities to interact with regulators in fulfilling regulatory demands

Financial Crime

  • Undertake the duty of Financial Crime Compliance Subject Matter Expert Advisory and/or conduct Financial Crime Risk investigations in a professional and efficient manner, so that the bank’s and regulatory standards are fulfilled
  • Keep abreast of new developments and intelligence associated with Anti-Money Laundering, Fraud, Anti-Bribery and Corruption as well as Sanctions

Compliance Advisory WPB Team

  • Form good partnerships with different business streams and provide professional advice in compliance matters for line management

Compliance Assurance

  • Compliance Assurance (CA) sits within the second line of defence (2LoD) and provides independent assurance services, to assist the bank in the timely identification, evaluation, and mitigation of regulatory and financial crime risks
  • Work closely with Chief Compliance Officers and other Group Compliance Capabilities to deliver time-sensitive independent insight on the management of regulatory, conduct, financial crime and reputational risks, mainly through the assessment of associated controls, to provide assurance to stakeholders of the effectiveness of the Group’s financial crime and regulatory risk management

 

Strategic Planning and Corporate Development

Corporate strategy

  • Assist in formulating the Bank’s medium term strategies, support execution, coordination, tracking and evaluation according to the Bank’s strategic planning framework
  • Help leading articulation and mobilisation to achieve strategic priorities
  • Support strategic business studies that are cross-businesses, functions and/or geographies in nature, derive actionable insights and make appropriate recommendations to the Bank’s senior management

Corporate Development

  • Take part in corporate development projects including acquisitions, disposal, joint venture and strategic alliance
  • Support governance and management of the Bank’s corporate investments and alliances and exploit synergies in accordance to the Bank’s strategic priorities
  • Support the raising of market perception of the Bank through thought-leadership and advocacy on key strategic topics

Chief of Staff

  • Support key activities of executive office including but not limited to governance papers and presentation materials for external and internal meetings, relationship management with key internal, external and industry bodies and monitoring of business results

What to expect

Global Banking connects large corporations and financial institutions to opportunities through a group of high-level relationship managers and tailored banking solutions. You'll rotate across Relationship Management teams and Product teams during the development programme and learn how to build strong and strategic partnerships with your clients.

You'll also support the driving of various new initiatives in Global Banking, such as new product development.

Hang Seng Indexes Company Limited (HSIL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Hang Seng Bank, is the leading index provider for the Hong Kong and mainland China markets.

The HSIL MT programme offers you an exclusive opportunity to gain experience in index research and constituent review of the broad range of indexes, including the well-known Hang Seng Index, which provide a wide spectrum of investor demand for different index investment solutions.

You'll also have exposure to different areas, including client management, product development, strategy as well as operations, transformation, and data management.

Plenty of opportunities will be offered for you to participate in projects helping Hong Kong companies establish themselves and capitalise on cross-boundary business opportunities in mainland China and the Greater Bay Area.
